The City of Plant City, Florida, is seeking a forward-thinking, collaborative engineering leader to serve as its next City Engineer.
Strategically located along the I-4 corridor between Tampa and Orlando, Plant City (population ~42,700) offers the best of both worlds—small-town character with access to major metropolitan markets. Known as the “Winter Strawberry Capital of the World,” the community is recognized for its safe, walkable neighborhoods, historic districts, quality schools, and strong sense of civic pride. Continued growth and economic development are driving ongoing investment in public infrastructure and capital improvements.
Reporting to the City Manager, the City Engineer serves as the City’s chief professional engineer and a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for guiding infrastructure planning, capital investment, and engineering operations. This position provides strategic advice to senior leadership and elected officials on infrastructure priorities, resiliency, and long-term risk.
Key responsibilities include leadership of the Engineering Department (14 FTEs), oversight of the City’s capital improvement program, stormwater management and regulatory compliance (MS4/NPDES), floodplain administration, and engineering review of private development. The City Engineer works in close coordination with other departments to ensure integrated infrastructure planning and delivery.
The ideal candidate is a technically strong, strategically minded leader with the ability to operate effectively at both operational and executive levels. Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field (master’s preferred) and at least seven (7) years of progressively responsible engineering experience, including leadership responsibility for staff, budgets, and capital projects. Ten (10)+ years of experience is preferred.
A Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license is required, or the ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity within three (3) months. Experience with stormwater systems, NPDES/MS4 compliance, floodplain management, and FEMA programs is expected. A Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) designation is preferred, or the ability to obtain one. Training or experience in public-sector leadership or organizational management (e.g., CPM or similar programs) is valued. National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required within one (1) year.
The salary range for this position is $112,611–$183,580, with a starting salary dependent on qualifications. The City offers a competitive executive compensation package, including a $4,800 annual vehicle allowance, 8% City contribution to a 401(a) retirement plan, comprehensive benefits, and no state income tax.
The first review of resumes will occur on May 25, 2026; the position will remain open until filled.
