Job Opening:  Quality Assurance Technician

Shift:  Monday – Friday 6 am – 2:30 pm (occasional additional day(s) and overtime expected to support business needs)

Ensure Leatherman products meet quality expectations by providing valid measurement data using appropriate gauging, inspection methodologies and sampling techniques to sourcing, engineering and manufacturing departments and external suppliers.  Support value streams to monitor the performance of the processes and ensure quality systems are in place.

Essential Functions

• Represent the quality department in assigned production value streams. Maintain ownership of area measurement systems and control plans. Lead quality efforts in the production value stream.
• Basic print reading including fundamentals of GD&T, interpreting feature control frames into measurement methods.
• Create and revise production control plans and WinSPC Collection Plans to ensure consistency between the print specification and selected measurement method.
• Determine Conformance of product by comparing print specification to actual measured results. Identify print specifications which are unclear and make recommendations for clarification.
• Verify production control measurements when either assisting operators or as part of an audit.
• Perform finished product performance inspection following an Acceptance Test Plan (ATP).
• Startup and basic program revisions for metrology equipment including hand tools, CMM, Keyence IM, & Spectrophotometer.
• Perform gage maintenance and calibration.
• Facilitate Gage R&R activities by organizing contributors and ensuring best practices for data input.
• Maintain records of inspection results. Present data that is consistent with manufacturing technical and statistical standards using Excel and Minitab.
• Advise operators on the correct use of metrology equipment, interpretation of the print specification, and accessibility of controlled information through WinSPC and Adept.
• Create Gage Operating Procedures (GOPs), and Work Instructions in support of advanced production operations.
• Establish suitable production measurement strategies using metrology principals for accuracy and resolution, using GR&R results as a measure of performance.
• Implement ECO changes to production measurement systems and WinSPC.
• Train new quality employees on inspection instructions and work instructions. Train new employees on use of measurement systems such as CMM, Keyence, and Spectrophotometer.
• Generate reports on current quality issues to leaders and management. Summarize and present findings on a periodic basis.
• Support all production value streams when quality issues arise. Perform basic maintenance and repair on measurement equipment following work instructions.  Support troubleshooting efforts with quality assurance technicians.

Experience and Education Requirements

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Two or more years of experience in dimensional inspection on components in a production environment.
• Demonstrated capability with dimensional inspection in lab and production environments.
• Ability to select and use the appropriate type of inspection devices such as calipers, micrometers, gage pins, thread gages, custom gages, comparators, microscopes, and CMM, then evaluate their measurement results to determine conformance to specification.
• Ability to read and interpret prints, including geometric dimension and tolerancing (GD&T).
• Demonstrated understanding of basic statistics including calculations of mean, median, mode, standard deviation, range, and variance.
• Must be able to perform Gage R&R studies.
• Problem solving skills, ability to apply DMAIC and use basic quality tools such as cause and effect diagrams, process flow maps, check sheets, Pareto charts, scatter diagrams, control charts, and histograms.
