The State Engineer for the North Dakota Department of Water Resources (DWR) under the direction of the Director oversees several regulatory functions and responsibilities, including oversight of dam safety, water appropriations, construction and drainage permits, along with other water permitting uses as outlined in chapter 61 of the NDCC. The mission of the Department of Water Resources is to improve the quality of life and strengthen the economy of North Dakota by managing the water resources of the state for the benefit of its citizens.
