The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Maricopa, Arizona, is seeking applications for a permanent, full-time Supervisory Research Plant Physiologist / Supervisory Research Geneticist (Plants) / Supervisory Research Agricultural Engineer to serve as Research Leader of a team using multidisciplinary approaches to improve sustainability, productivity and profitability of U.S. agriculture in arid agroecosystems (GS 14/15; $112,801 to $172,490 annually plus benefits). Provides leadership in developing strategies to produce new germplasm with higher yield and better tolerance to abiotic/biotic stresses in arid climates and associated with global climate change, and for use as new sources of biofuels and bioproducts. Personal research will complement existing team with field and/or laboratory-based research that enhances efforts in conditioning plants for drought and heat stress tolerance, industrial crop production, or general climate resilience. Research might include one or more of the following: data science and analytical approaches that underpin trait discovery; providing novel methods of high throughput phenotyping (HTP); identification of traits such as heat and drought tolerance, water-use efficiency, seed, lint or grain yield and quality. Directly supervising and evaluating research scientists and technicians. Utilizes communication skills and team building to manage the Unit's fiscal, physical, and human resources. Develops and maintains productive interactions with a variety of research partners, customers, and stakeholders. Represents USDA and ARS on all matters related to the Unit's mission and research programs. Research is conducted in support of ARS National Program (NP) 301 - Plant Genetic Resources, Genomics, and Genetic Improvement and NP 212 - Climate Change, Soils & Emissions.
