The City of Everett is accepting applications on an open/competitive basis for the Civil Service examination process for Engineering Technician.
This is a technical engineering design support role performed in a professional office environment but may also include infrequent field work.
Work will involve technical support for a variety of tasks and projects primarily related to the City’s Public Works department. This includes major infrastructure disciplines such as water, sewer and stormwater conveyance, surface water management, roadways, and traffic. Support also is provided to other departments such as Parks, Facilities and Transit. Employees in this class may be expected to have technical knowledge and proficiencies, gained through training and experience, in one or more of the following areas depending on assignment: record keeping, graphics, project scheduling, hand drafting, 3D computer-aided design, use of GIS software, field research, and the ability to make construction materials estimates and related calculations. The work of Engineering Technicians may be reviewed while in progress or upon completion by a technical supervisor. Once an employee gains proficiency in his/her assigned tasks, more independence and discretion is expected in handling projects and priorities. ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
As a member of the Public Works Department, this Engineering Technician role is typically expected to:
Use Autodesk Civil3D, Infraworks, Revit and other software applications to create interactive 3D engineering models used in the design and analysis of building structures, ground surfaces, roadway corridors, and gravity and pressure pipe systems.
Work closely with Engineers and Project Managers to design and produce a set of construction documents that adhere to the high quality of the City’s established CAD and Graphic standards.
Update construction documents to record drawings based on discussions, written comments and GPS data.
Prepare presentation graphics for a variety of professional disciplines within other City departments. For example: Architecture, Landscaping, Electrical, Process and Structural.
Collaborate in the preparation of spreadsheets, graphics or other exhibits for presentation to staff, City officials, permitting agencies, neighborhood/community groups, or others. This may include specialty maps, charts, PowerPoint slides, schedules or illustrations.
Perform various types of traffic, mapping, surveying, and engineering measurements; data collection; investigations; and studies in the field in all types of weather and traffic conditions.
Occasionally assist the traffic department in collecting and updating annual vehicle movement counts.
Perform related work as required.
The following knowledge, skills and abilities are essential and critical to successful performance in this position:
Terminology, methods, practices, and techniques of civil engineering design presentation.
Civil engineering calculations for roadways, water systems, sewers, and storm drainage.
Importing points and data from GIS, field surveys, mapping grade GPS, and photogrammetry to create digital surface and pipe models.
Mathematics, including algebra, trigonometry, geometry and statistics, and skill in performing related mathematical calculations.
Civil engineering principles and practices as applied to the development, scheduling, construction, and maintenance of municipal engineering projects.
Skill and Ability to:
Use current version of Civil3D and adjust quickly to new technology.
Communicate technical information effectively verbally, in writing and through high quality visually appealing graphics.
Prepare short technical reports of collected data, including graphics depicting statistical relationships.
Read and interpret civil engineering plans and drawings.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other city staff, and the public.
Relate to others in a courteous and respectful manner.

Work safely and in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, and with City laws, policies, and standards.
Support diversity and multicultural understanding in the workplace.
Successful completion of a two (2) year course in civil engineering technology at a community college or vocational institute, which included courses in trigonometry, algebra, surveying, civil engineering design, and AutoCAD; AND
One (1) year of technical experience directly related to civil engineering applications, including work in surveying and/or AutoCAD; OR
Any equivalent combination of civil engineering training or experience.

All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.
Extensive background checks will be conducted.
A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
